IPL 2020 Preview: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are among the most successful franchises in Indian Premier League history. They are also the most consistent: MS Dhoni’s men have made it to the IPL finals more than any other team in the competition’s history. CSK is also the only team to progress to the knockout stages of every season it has played. No other team can stake claim to such a streak.

With MS Dhoni in charge for much of their existence, CSK’s success has been built around the best domestic Indian players, along with some shrewd overseas purchases. Their success has meant CSK betting has been a very profitable endeavour.

The Super Kings lost in the finals against Mumbai last season by just one run in the most incredible finale to date. The team spent very judiciously in last year’s auction and strengthened their squad. After the IPL 2020 season was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, cricket fans are now eagerly waiting to watch their favorite team back in action. So what can we look forward to from the men in yellow this time around?

Bet365, meanwhile, has CSK as second favourites (+500) behind joint-favourites Mumbai and Hyderabad. Both are great options to consider when CSK betting.

The Chennai Super Kings have made it a point to not disturb their “core unit”, a philosophy that has led them to much success. It also reflects in the amount of money bets they receive each time. When one looks at the quality of the CSK squad, it’s easy to see why.

CSK betting

Followers of the IPL and online cricket betting in general will be very familiar with some of the names in this CSK squad. Many have been with the team for all of their title successes. This includes MS Dhoni, who will lead the side once again, and his deputy Suresh Raina.

Dhoni is 39 now and while he has not been active on the international circuit following India’s World Cup exit, his participation in the upcoming IPL was never in doubt. However, MS Dhoni recently announced his retirement from international cricket, which shook the entire cricket fraternity. One of the greatest players to grace the game, MS Dhoni lifted every single ICC trophy during his tenure as captain of the Indian cricket team. He brought the same success to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Considering the motivation he has to perform, make sure to think about Dhoni when you are betting on CSK.

You can put your money on CSK as the outright winner for IPL 2020. Listed as joint favourites with bookmaker odds of 5.50, there are reasons why the Super Kings have been placed at the top. The odds are really tasty and you can certainly look out for this bet.

Apart from this, you can also place a bet on Imran Tahir as the top bowler for this IPL 2020 season. He won the purple cap last season and the pitches in UAE are on the slower side. So, it’s worth taking a punt in pre-tournament online cricket betting on the Proteas spinner.

Since the IPL will now be played in UAE for the 2020 season, CSK’s team will mostly fare well in the Gulf country. Most pitches in UAE are the slower side and you will rarely get to see 200+ scores. In this year’s Pakistan Super League, there were zero 200+ scores. In 2014 when the IPL was played, there were just two 200+ scores in the season and that too in the same match. CSK boasts a great batting lineup and the main batsmen include Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Kedar Kadhav, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu besides MS Dhoni himself.

Great bowling at the death has accounted for much of CSK’s success over the years. CSK’s bowling is ideally suited for UAE pitches as their home stadium M Chidambram is also on the slower side. CSK skipper MS Dhoni used to shuffle between his spinners last season. Nevertheless, if there is one department where CSK have been found wanting, it is nailing a proper fast bowler. They will be hoping Lungi Ngidi and Josh Hazlewood are up to the challenge this time around. The pair will have reliable support from Imran Tahir (Purple Cap winner in 2019), Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh. Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur will also be available at MSD’s disposal.

However, CSK have often—and successfully—relied on all-rounders and that thought has played a huge part in their auction strategies over the years. Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson and Ravindra Jadeja head that group and will have the likes of Mitchell Santner and Sam Curran for comany this season.

Bravo, especially, is a fan-favourite. The wily West Indian has a few tricks up his sleeve with the ball and is handy with the bat too.

That’s a very impressive squad and it’s easy to see why.

For those taking an IPL satta online, 2020 holds a lot of possibilities. The IPL 2020 odds give the Super Kings a strong chance. They also have options in the individual markets, too. Bettors will be looking at Watson, Raina and others in the online cricket betting markets for top batsman. Meanwhile, Bravo and Jadeja lead the way for top bowler.

Unsurprisingly, Chennai Super Kings entered the IPL 2020 auction in Kolkata last December with a clear strategy. With an available purse of INR 14.6 crore, CSK managed to successfully avail the services of all-rounder Sam Curran (England), pacer Josh Hazlewood (Australia) and former KXIP and KKR leg-spinner Piyush Chawla.

Released players included Sam Billings, David Willey and Mohit Sharma. True to their mantra, the core was left untouched.

The Super Kings held a conditioning camp from August 15 to August 20 in Chennai. The camp was designed to help players regain their fitness as most of the athletes are returning from a long break.

CSK’s spinner Harbhajan Singh did not depart with the rest of the team for Dubai due to personal reasons. South African players Faf du Plessis and Lungi Ngidi are expected to arrive in the first week of September.

Mitchell Santner, Imran Tahir, and Dwayne Bravo are some of the players who are now playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

It’s tough to join a team like CSK where there are so many talented players already. Most spots are fixed, but there will be rotation done by the captain MS Dhoni. There are also certain bowling places that we can ink in for the start of the competition. Looking at the roster, those looking for IPL betting online might want to see the following:

1. Shane Watson
2. Ambati Rayudu
3. Suresh Raina
4. Faf du Plessis
5. MS Dhoni
6. Kedar Jadhav
7. Dwayne Bravo
8. Ravindra Jadeja
9. Deepak Chahar
10. Harbhajan Singh
11. Imran Tahir

Shane Watson & Ambati Rayudu

CSK’s opening pair is fixed. It will be Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu who will take the openers’ guard. Watson is a seasoned T20 player who has done wonders for the franchise. He is an aggressive player whereas Ambati Rayudu is an ever-reliable batsman. One can take on the bowlers and the other knows how to steady the ship when required.

In last year’s IPL, Shane Watson did not have a great time in the group stage matches, but skipper MS Dhoni and CSK’s management showed faith in the former Australian international. Watson repaid the faith in the knockouts with some amazing knocks.

Ambati Rayudu has been one of the most underrated players in the T20 format. Rayudu will be a key player for CSK in IPL 2020 as he can handle the slow and low pitches in the gulf country.

Middle Order:

Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, MS Dhoni

Suresh Raina has been a solid figure at Chennai Super Kings. In IPL 2014, Raina wasn’t great with his bat as he scored 100 odd runs in the 5 innings with a below average strike rate of 105, however, he will be looking to improve it after announcing his retirement on the same day as skipper MS Dhoni.

UAE pitches are really suited for batsmen like Faf du Plessis who like to build their innings. If the openers depart cheaply, Faf du Plessis will prove to be a real asset. He knows how to dig deep and can keep the scoreboard moving.

MS Dhoni will also be looking to extend his rich form from IPL 2019 to IPL 2020. After his retirement announcement, it will be interesting to see how it affects him on the field. His leadership has provided rich dividends to the Chennai Super Kings franchise and they will be hoping for the same performance this time around in the UAE.

Kedar Jadhav, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja

Jadhav has proved to be handy for CSK. He knows what his team expects out of him and delivers more often than not. His spin bowling might also prove to be real handful in those UAE pitches.

Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja have been the backbone for CSK in the lower order with both the bat and the ball. Both all-rounders have been part of some scintillating finishes and they are as good as one can be for a format like T20.

Bravo’s off-cutters and slower ones will prove to be really useful in crucial moments. He’s an experienced player and can win matches on his own.

Deepak Chahar, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

Much of CSK’s success last season came down to how well MS Dhoni used his bowlers. Deepak Chahar is a conventional swing bowler in the same mould of Praveen Kumar and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. He really troubled the batsmen in last season’s IPL and has an excellent economy of just 7.28 in T20s. Apart from being a wonderful swing bowler, he can score some quick runs as well.

Deepak Chahar will be supported by Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir who will take care of the spin department. Imran Tahir won the purple cap in IPL 2019 and was one of the main reasons why CSK reached the finals. Tahir took 26 wickets in 17 matches with an amazing economy of 6.69. Harbhajan Singh has been ever consistent and breaks partnerships like he used to do while playing for Indian team.

Chennai Super Kings’ squad for IPL 2020: MS Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Deepak Chahar, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, Karn Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, Kedar Jadhav, Naryan Jagadeesan, Mitchell Santner, Murali Vijay, Monu Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shane Watson, Shardul Thakur, Suresh Raina, Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood, Piyush Chawla, R Sai Kishore.

CSK’s main strength lies in the fact that their overall team ticks all the boxes for what’s required to win an IPL trophy. You can start with their batting, which includes hitters like Shane Watson and Kedar Jadhav, plus players like Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu who are reliable and know when to take charge, but also when to keep the score moving.

MS Dhoni has been one of CSK’s biggest strengths since IPL started. Be it his batting or shrewd tactics in his captaincy, he is a real gem. In UAE conditions where the pitches are on the slower side, spinners will play a really important role. They have some amazing depth in the form of Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner.

Deepak Chahar alongside Dwayne Bravo and Lungi Ngidi can fire things up and keep the opposition on the backfoot. To put things into perspective, this CSK side is a complete overall package.

It’s a difficult task to find a weakness in this Chennai Super Kings’ side. Leaving players out and the rotation can possibly be issues for the skipper, but he has handled it well in the past.

CSK also tends to bat a little slow and their plan sometimes backfires on them. It will be interesting to see which tactics tactics they employ in the UAE conditions.

Overseas players cost a fortune at the auction. Nonetheless, domestic Indian players are actually the highest earners in this Chennai Super Kings squad. MS Dhoni leads the way with a salary of $2.1 million, followed by Suresh Raina at $1.5 million. Kedar Jadhav just gets into seven figures at $1.1 million, while Ravindra Jadeja comes in at just above $974,000.

The first overseas player then completes the list of high earners. Dwayne Bravo is a long-time member of the squad and the West Indian claims a salary of $890,000.

CSK was one of the original franchises that competed in the first-ever Indian Premier League back in 2008. MS Dhoni was with the team right from the start, and at the 2008 auction, the owners went big to sign star overseas players. These included Stephen Fleming, Matthew Hayden, Muttiah Muralitharan and Michael Hussey.

The Chennai Super Kings management also had some of the best stars of Indian cricket. Still, they had to wait until 2010 before claiming their first IPL title. An impressive campaign was concluded in the final when 57 from Suresh Raina helped CSK to defeat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs.

Chennai were known at this point as the strongest team in the league and the franchise continually topped the IPL betting markets. 2011 was another successful year as the Super Kings defended their title. Murali Vijay’s brilliant 95 helped the side to overcome RCB by the wide margin of 58 runs.

CSK continually made the playoffs from this point, but they couldn’t quite add to their title. And there were less happy times around the corner. CSK fell foul of regulations as a result of a match fixing probe. They subsequently received a ban from the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Indian Premier League.

2018 saw the return of Chennai Super Kings to the IPL. And many of their original players returned from the temporary Gujarat and Pune franchises. Some new faces were added too, but fans didn’t really know what to expect after a two-year absence. There was, however, some support for CSK in matka gambling markets. And that faith was to be justified.

MS Dhoni’s men finished level on points with the Sunrisers and were second to SRH on net run rate. From there, the Super Kings progressed to the final. There we witnessed one of the best individual displays in the history of the tournament.

CSK faced the Sunrisers with SRH taking first knock and posting a respectable 178/6. Chennai were in a little trouble at 16/1, but Shane Watson then blitzed 117 from 57 balls to take his side to their third title. It was a great comeback. And with a settled side heading into 2019, there should be more to come.

Here is Chennai Super Kings’ record in the Indian Premier League since the competition began in 2008.

2008: Runner-up
2009: Semi-finalist
2010: Champion
2011: Champion
2012: Runner-up
2013: Runner-up
2014: Playoff
2015: Runner-up
2016: Suspended
2017: Suspended
2018: Champion
2019: Runner-up

The new franchises were established at the start of the IPL in 2008. At that time, India Cements acquired the rights to the Chennai Super Kings for ten years.

As the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of that firm, former ICC Chairman N Srinivasan was therefore installed as the de facto owner of CSK. An amendment followed later when Chennai were transferred to a company referred to as Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd.

CSK have a loyal home support, giving the side a boost in the IPL betting markets. Their regular home is the historic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which is known by all supporters and cricket fans as the Chepauk. It is a great ground, founded in 1916, and it can hold up to 50,000 Super Kings supporters.

At times, Chennai have been forced to host matches away from the Chepauk, usually for political reasons. In 2014, Chennai Super Kings had to play all their home games in Ranchi because of problems with the Tamil Nadu Government. Later, at the 2018 IPL, similar issues meant that CSK were forced to play their final six home games in Pune.
